ATHOL (WBZ-AM/24/7) --  The Exchange Street Bridge in Athol is closed after suffering possible damage from an ice jam on Millers River.

The ice jam also caused the evacuation of a building at an apartment complex for seniors because of the possibility of flooding.

A little league field was flooded over the weekend.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Karyn Regal spoke to Athol resident Dan Vincent downriver at the South Street Bridge.

"Never seen it in my whole life, this is crazy," he said, looking at the chunks of ice--some as big as cars--in the river. "Never seen it like this ever."

The bridge will remain closed until it can be inspected by state transportation officials, which will be Monday at the earliest.

The rain on Friday caused ice blocks on the river to break free, and a large one hit the bridge Saturday morning.
