MBTA, Machinists Union Reach Agreement

BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- After a long and sometimes bitter fight, the MBTA has reached a tentative agreement with the union representing machinists, I.A.M. Local 264.

A little more than a year ago, the MBTA reached a deal with its largest union--the Carmen's Union. Now, they've reached a tentative agreement with the machinists who keep the buses running.

With both unions, there was a lot of talk about privatization--most recently, the T was talking about the millions of dollars they'd save by outsourcing some of the work done at the MBTA maintenance garages.

It is not yet clear how this agreement might affect privatization efforts, as neither side has released details--but the tentative agreement is on the general terms that will constitute a new, multi-year collective bargaining contract.
