Minister Helps Asylum Seeker Adjust To Life In America

BOSTON, MA (WBZ-AM) -- Prior to the immigration policy being enforced, a mom and daughter from El Salvador who were held back by border patrol in California, were able to travel together to Massachusetts. They’ve been living with a local minister who sponsored them.

Iris Marlenes and her 6-year-old daughter landed in Boston on May 13.

About a week after they arrived at the U.S./Mexico Border near San Diego with a caravan of migrants.

They left El Salvador to escape from gang violence.

Reverend Jill Cowie volunteered to help the asylum seekers by offering a room in her Roslindale home.

She says had the timing been different, Marlenes might not be with her daughter today.

Although the mother and daughter are unable to speak English, she says they’re adjusting to life in the  United States u.s, quite well. And they’ve reunited with relatives in Virginia.

WBZ NewsRadio1030’s Bernice Corpuz reports.
