Saugus Football Coach Appealing Firing

SAUGUS, MA (WBZ-AM) -- An embattled Saugus high school football coach, who was also fired from teaching, could learn as early as this week whether he could get back to work.

Anthony Nalen, a teacher at the Belmonte Middle School was fired last Friday after he received a notice of termination on Tuesday

An Essex, County Superior Court Judge could decide as early as this week whether Nalen could return to work. The case is expected back on the bench Tuesday.

Nalen’s attorney Michael Castano says his client is suing the school district for firing him without a proper hearing first.

"If the injunction is not granted and he's not re-instated as football coach, my recourse at this point is to continue the lawsuit. Three are going to be more counts added to the lawsuit they were anyway but certainly it would appear that wrongful termination would be added at this point," Castano said.

Nalen was suspended from coaching the varsity football team on August 30th, after a student wore boxer shorts during practice. But police cleared him of any wrongdoing. WBZ reached out to the Saugus School Public Schools superintendent for comment.
