CONCORD, MA (WBZ-AM) — Members of the Concord Corinthian Lodge unsealed a time capsule left for them by Concord Masons a century ago.
Inside the copper tube time capsule was a flag with 25 stars honoring the 32 Concord Masons who were veterans at the time.
Lodge Treasurer Douglas Ellis said finding the capsule was not an easy task.
“First, I didn’t have any idea where it was. I knew there was a spot in the kitchen where there was a diagonal cut in the tiles. So, I thought, that’s probably right,” Ellis said. “I got a sledgehammer out, broke the tile, got a saw, cut open the plywood, opened it up, found an old sewer pipe. So, that wasn’t it."
The search lasted for about a month before the time capsule was found in an unopened drawer in the Lodge’s library.
“One of our brothers is a locksmith, he has keys to everything. He opened it up, there it was,” Ellis said.
Two stars on the found flag are gold. They represent members who did not come home — Lt. Charles Spencer and John Rose.
