BOSTON, MA (WBZ-AM) — Boston Mayor Marty Walsh was joined by a number of college presidents at Boston City Hall Wednesday to express concerns about proposed changes to TitleIX.
The proposed changes to Title IX by the Trump Administration could make victims of sexual assault in College reluctant to come forward.
What Exactly is Title IX?
According to the U.S. Department of Education, established in 1972, it is a set a of federal rules created to protect the civil rights of students and staff. It includes guidance on how sexual assaults and harassments are handled on campus receiving federal funds for educational purposes.
Among the proposed changes it would allow alleged the assaulters to cross-examine in public their alleged victims. Those who spoke at this event say that could make alleged victims reluctant to come forward.
One of those students concerned about the changes is Katie Mitrano, a senior at UMass Boston.
She says when she was a freshman she was sexually assaulted, but she did not tell anyone about it until right here at this event.
She said she will not stop fighting because she wants to protect students like her sister who is applying to colleges now.
