ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A state-funded program is set to power heating and cooling at River Court Apartments in Attleboro with geothermal energy.
It will take advantage of 55 degree sweet spot 460 feet underground. It aims to cut costs on heating and cooling for the building.
“They’re drilling 20 different wells. They are sending pipe down. They are grabbing the heat from the earth, bringing that heat up to pipes that will be circulated through the building,” John Donato, the project’s supervisor, said.

Donato said the only other place he knows of with a similar project is in New Bedford. But, Attleboro House Authority head Paul Dumouchel said if all goes well, that could be changing.
"As I understand it, it is a pilot program and they are looking into doing more of these types of projects," Dumouchel said.
It is estimated to take 8-10 years for the savings the pay off the $5.5 million project, which is scheduled to be finished in January.
