LYNN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A diorama depicting a passenger railway that used to run from East Boston to Lynn is being recreated by a man in Lynn, Mass.
70-year-old Todd Gieg spends more than five hours a day recreating the narrow gauge railway built in 1875. Each morning, he heads to his studio in the garage next to his house in Lynn.
“Seriously, I’ve never quite grown up,” said Gieg. “This is sort of like being on the floor of my parent's living room playing with my trains.”
Although it took about three months to create the original railway, Gieg has spent 12 years creating his model, with an estimated eight more years to finish it.
In addition to the railroad, the intricate diorama includes little buildings, little landmarks and little people. When it’s complete, Gieg believes the four feet wide miniature world will be fifty-six feet long.
Part of the diorama has been on display at the Lynn Museum for several years, but it will be taken down in a couple of months. Gieg hopes to find a new home once he is done working on his masterpiece.
