The iconic Greek island of Santorini, which has been dubbed 'Instagram Island,' was struck by a series of 200 earthquakes in recent days, CNN reports.
Schools will be closed on Monday (February 3) and residents were advised to avoid large indoor gatherings and multiple ports, which includes the port of Fira, which is located just below the island's capital. More than 200 earthquakes were reported between Santorini and Amorgos, including the most powerful reported, a 4.6-magnitude, authorities reported.
Santorini is an area prone to earthquakes as its located on several fault lines, yet still attracts 3.4 million visitors annually, far more than the local population of around 20,000 residents. The island, which features a crescent-shaped caldera formed by a 3,600-year-old large volcanic eruption, has been nicknamed 'Instagram Island' for its photogenic golden light and scenic views.
An emergency committee was setup on Sunday (February 2) to discuss the risks created by the latest tremors, while a followup is scheduled for Monday (February 3).
At least 53 people were killed, more than 100 were injured and at least one-third of the houses collapsed during the most recent large earthquake, a 7.5-magnitude, which was followed by an 80-foot tsunami, in Santorini on July 9, 1956.
