6 Mass. Cities Celebrating Indigenous Peoples' Day Over Columbus Day

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Monday is Columbus Day, but six towns and cities in Massachusetts will not be celebrating.

These municipalities will instead being recognizing Indigenous Peoples’ Day. They include Brookline, Cambridge, Somerville, Amherst, Northampton, and Great Barrington, according to the Boston Globe.

Municipalities in the state have been celebrating Indigenous Peoples’s Day since 2016.

“This name change is part of a growing movement across the country to change the narrative of history towards a recognition of survival, resilience, diversity, and strength of Indigenous Peoples,” the city of Cambridge wrote on their website.

Great Barrington joined the other municipalities after making the decision last month.

The change to Indigenous Peoples’ Day has also been happening around the country.

The New York Times reports that Maine and Vermont have also signed laws renaming the holiday. The District of Columbia signed a law as recently as Friday.
