Assabet Valley Students Build Tiny Home For Maine Veteran

MARLBORO, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Students at a vocational technical school in Marlboro are hard at work building a small home for a once-homeless military veteran from Maine.

The Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School students have been working on the 560-square-foot home at the school's carpentry studio.

Lead carpentry teacher Bill Italiano told WBZ NewsRadio's Kim Tunnicliffe he's glad his students are getting real-world, real-life experience building a real house.

"Instead of doing a mock-up that we gotta tear down, they're taking some pride in doing this," he said.

Italiano said the home will get shipped to Maine, where it will be lowered onto a foundation.

"They've got a day's worth of work up there," he said. "At the end of that day, pretty much, we'll give him the key and he can move in."

Sophomore Juliette Hughes said it's an amazing, heartwarming feeling to know that the hard work she's doing on the house will soon provide that veteran with a new place to live.

"I've never seen, and I don't think the school has ever done, anything like this before," she said. "Something as simple as a high school project can literally give someone a home."
