BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston Acting Mayor Kim Janey confirmed Thursday that Boston Public School students and staff will be required to wear masks in the fall.

"When it comes to children under the age of 12, masks remain the best protection available," Janey said during a press conference.

Masks are already required in summer school, and the policy will be extended to the fall. Janey said policy is also supported by the Boston Teachers Union.

The city is also working with charter and parochial schools "to ensure every young person in Boston returns to school safely," Janey said.

This announcement comes days after the CDC issued new guidance recommending that all students and staff in schools K-12 wear face coverings.

The CDC also said that fully-vaccinated people should wear masks in indoor public places in areas with high or substantial transmission.
