Source: BPD Commissioner Gross Prepares Likely Run For Mayor Of Boston

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — With the nomination of Boston Mayor Marty Walsh as Joe Biden's Labor Secretary, the race for his old office is heating up.

Boston City Councilors Michelle Wu and Andrea Campbell have already announced their plans to run for Mayor, but the race is likely to get more crowded.

According to WBZ's NightSide host Dan Rea, Boston Police Commissioner William Gross could be next to throw his hat in the ring.

"A source very close to Willie Gross reached out to me last night and told me he is 90 percent of the way there, just checking off with some family members to make sure everybody is on board."

Commissioner Gross has been with the BPD for more than three decades, and he's held the top spot since 2018.

"I think people have looked to him truly as a public servant," Rea said. "A lot of politicians will say they're public servants, but what they're doing is they're looking for a political office to maybe become a stepping stone toward another political office."

Other names being discussed as possible candidates for Mayor of Boston include a state representative, a state senator, and at least one other city councilor.
