Brockton Mayor: Police Shoot Hatchet-Wielding Man On Main Street

BROCKTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Police shot a man on Brockton's Main Street Wednesday afternoon after he came at them with a hatchet, according to the city's mayor.

Mayor Moises Rodrigues was driving by the scene at the time, and told WBZ NewsRadio's Carl Stevens he noticed a commotion inside a Main Street phone store around 12:30 p.m.

"There was a guy in the store waving his arms with the little hatchet," Mayor Rodrigues said.

A hatchet can be seen in the above photos of the roped-off crime scene near Pleasant and Main Streets.

Those inside the store ran out and alerted nearby police, who were escorting a funeral procession. Rodrigues said officers told the man to put down the hatchet, but he wouldn't listen.

"He refused to do that and came at the officers," Mayor Rodrigues said. "One of the officers fired a shot, hitting the individual. Then, another officer that was at the scene tazed the gentleman as well, and he kept on coming, and a third officer shot him and he finally dropped."

That man, who has not been identified, was taken to an area hospital. There was no word yet on his condition.
