Sen. Markey Visits Border, Condemns 'Unacceptable' Conditions

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Sen. Ed Markey visited detention facilities on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border Friday, calling the situation there an "abomination."

Markey visited Brownsville, Texas, where he spoke of seeing sick children sleeping on floors in unsanitary conditions. In Mexico, he said he saw hundreds more people lining up to make their cases for asylum.

In an interview with WBZ NewsRadio's Nichole Davis, the Massachusetts senator described what he saw in the shelters.

"No toothbrushes, no showers, just absolutely unacceptable," he said. "I saw another facility where there were more than 400 people crowded into a facility meant for only 240 people, with mothers with their children who were fleeing violence in Honduras, others from El Salvador, other countries, just looking for the United States to give them an opportunity to make their case for asylum."

"What I saw on both sides of the border were the most horrible conditions which are imaginable," Markey said. "No matter which way you look on our border, it is an absolute abomination what is being done by Donald Trump in the name of the American people."

Sen. Markey and Davis also spoke about Vice President Mike Pence's visit to the border, this weekend's planned ICE raids, and more.
