Emu Corralled After Wandering Haverhill Streets

HAVERHILL, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — An emu has been safely corralled after it was spotted wandering through a residential part of Haverhill following Tuesday night's heavy storm.

Haverhill police said Wednesday in more than ten years of service, Animal Control Officer Michelle Cannon has responded to incidents involving a wide variety of animals, from common domestic animals to wild animals like moose and bear.

"Earlier this morning on 17th Ave, she added an Emu to that list," said HPD. "With the assistance of patrol officers, the bird was safely corralled."

There was no immediate word where the bird came from. According to the state, emus are considered domestic birds, which means residents can "possess, propagate, maintain, import, buy, sell, and dispose of the animals" without a MassWildlife permit or license.
