GLOUCESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Manchester doctor is on a quest to break the Guinness World Record for most push-ups in 12 hours.

Dr. Joe DeMarco, 57, began doing push-ups at MAC Fitness Gloucester at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, and will keep going until 8:00 p.m that night. The current record is 20,086 push-ups.

"I've done all the work physically," DeMarco said, referring to his preparation for the attempt. "Push-ups and tons and tons and tons of cardio, so I have workouts where I'm doing six hours, seven hours a day."

In addition to trying to break the world record, DeMarco is raising money for Cape Ann Animal Shelter and trying to promote a healthy lifestyle for older individuals.

"I'm going to be 58 this year, and I just want to inspire people that it doesn't matter how old you are, you can do anything you want," said DeMarco. "You just got to take care of yourself and eat well and exercise, and you can do anything."

DeMarco's attempt is being livestreamed on his YouTube page. Following the attempt, the footage will be sent to Guinness, who will verify it.
