Volunteers Build New Revere Playground In Just Six Hours

REVERE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — It took six hours, a lot of free labor, and the help of a non-profit, and boom—a Revere school has a new playground.

Revere Mayor Brian Arrigo told WBZ NewsRadio's Karyn Regal that Della Russo Park, located behind the Paul Revere Innovation School, had an old playground with old equipment.

"The city made a decision to pull all the equipment out because it was dangerous," Mayor Arrigo said.

So, the city teamed up with KaBOOM, a non-profit that helps communities build playgrounds for children, for the project. Keurig Dr. Pepper provided $200,000 for playground equipment, as well as about 100 volunteers, according to The Revere Journal.

KaBOOM CEO James Seigle said some towns have the means to keep playground equipment current, and some don't.

"Sometimes we take for granted that kids that are going to elementary school have a great place to play, but what we see is, that is not always the case," he said. "In every community, there's a divide between kids who have all the opportunities, and other kids who don't."

With the legion of volunteers helping out, it was kind of like a barn raising, but with slides, and excited children who couldn't wait to play.

Seigle said it's the third playground they've built in the Boston area in the last week.
