BURLINGTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Legendary WBZ anchor Gary LaPierre was remembered during the Lahey Health Cancer Institute’s 14th annual 5K Walk & Run.

LaPierre was treated for leukemia at the Lahey Health Cancer Institute before his passing earlier this year. His family’s team — Gary’s Angels — was formed in his memory, and raised over $9,000 at the walk.

“The loving nurses, doctors and aides who cared for Gary during his time at Lahey were truly Gary's Angels,” the team wrote on the event’s website.

The event raised over $500,000 total for cancer patients. Giacomo Coraluppi, of Newton, finished first in the race. Abby McCabe, of Framingham, was the women’s champion.

First-place finishers among cancer survivors — Robert Lucci, of Wakefield, and Marianne Zenitz Jones, of Chelmsford — were also honored.

The money raised will go to programs and services that directly benefit cancer patients.
