BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Wheaton College freshman, and lacrosse player for the college, has been benched his head is too large for the helmet.
Alex Chu has been playing lacrosse since the sixth grade. In high school, he was a star goalie. In college, he is facing a challenge.
“I have a pretty large head so finding something that fits all the certifications for college lacrosse has been pretty difficult,” Chu said.
In high school, Chu configured a special helmet. But, college sports have stricter rules, so Chu is stuck on the sidelines.
“It’s been pretty hard because I’ve had a limited role. What I’m able to do with them is just smaller warm up stuff, but I haven’t been able to fully play with the team. So, I’ve just been there supporting whatever way I can,” Chu said. “But, essentially I’ve just been on the sidelines the whole time."
Chu said helmet manufacturer, Cascade, made a special larger helmet for a lacrosse player with the same problem at the University of Albany. Chu said he has not received the same help.
