BOSTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Last month, recently retired New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski was asked to put speculation about a comeback to rest.

"Whatever I say it doesn't matter," Gronkowski told reporters. "It will always be crazy out there."

Well, the rumors are certainly still out there - and speculation is increasing as the defending champs kick off training camp next Thursday.

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, a source close to Gronkowski pegs his chances of a comeback at 40 percent.

Florio says Gronkowski isn't thinking about football right now. He's 18 pounds lighter, enjoying life, and doesn't need the money, but it's possible the fan favorite will miss his teammates and the game once the season gets underway.

What else could persuade Gronk? An appeal from Tom Brady directly could make a difference - and it's believed coach Bill Belichick wouldn't be opposed to adding the future Hall of Fame player to his roster again.

Who could blame him?
