THE Voice of Pro Wrestling, Mean Gene Okerlund Dead At 76.

Gene Okerlund started in the same humble profession as myself, as a radio DJ in Nebraska, but he answered to a higher calling than the cornfields. In 1970 he took a job with the American Wrestling Association and never looked back.

How many Saturday afternoons did you spend watching Mean Gene holding a microphone in front of the likes of Randy "Macho Man" Savage, Andre The Giant, and Rowdy Roddy Piper, and somehow manage to not burst out laughing at what they were screaming at him?

What a career. He even wrestled! Pinning Mr. Fuji in a tag team match with Hulk Hogan in 1984. He was loved by fans and wrestlers alike. Gene was the best man at The Iron Sheik's wedding.

Triple H tweeted, "A voice and sound track to an entire era of our industry. He was the star of some of @WWE’s most memorable segments. “Mean Gene” was beloved by all who got to work with him. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time."

The WWE put out a statement that Gene passed away at the age of 76. No cause of death was given. Check out some highlights and tributes to Mean Gene...
