Malcolm Butler Became A Super Bowl XLIX Hero 5 Years Ago Today

Five years ago tonight in Glendale Arizona, the New England Patriots were taking on the defending champion Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX.

The Seahawks were loaded with talent, Russel Wilson was a throwing and running threat, Marshawn Lynch seemed unstoppable, and the Legion of Boom was even stronger. The Patriots had 37 year old Tom Brady in his prime, Rob Gronkowski back in All Pro form, and Shane Vereen handling running duties.

It was a back and forth battle with the first touchdown coming in the 2nd quarter off a Brady pass to Brandon LaFell. Tied at halftime, you just knew this would come down to the wire. With Seattle in position to win the game on the goal line with seconds to play, Patriots fans were biting their nails down to their wrists. That's when head coach Pete Carroll inexplicably called for a pass play instead of letting Marshawn Lynch run it in.

With 20 seconds to go Russell Wilson threw to Ricardo Lockette, but the Patriots 24 year old rookie, Malcolm Butler, got to it first. We all had to watch the replay about 5 times to believe it! The Patriots won their 4th Lombardi Trophy and Malcolm Butler became a huge part of Boston sports history. Watch it again...
