This past weekend the iconic Gibson Flying V guitar celebrated its 60th Birthday. Designs for the futuristic axe began in 1956, but it wasn't until January 7th, 1958 that the company received a patent on what would become a legendary instrument. Although it didn't sell well upon its initial release, Blues greats, Albert King and Lonnie Mack made it their go-to. Many Rock guitarist would follow suit over the years like Dave Davies, Jimi Hendrix, Michael Schenker (orig. Scorpions,UFO). The V also made its way to forefront of Heavy Metal with artists like Judas Priest, Metallica, Megadeth and tons of others.
Due to its popularity, multiple manufacturers have released their own version of the iconic V, with their own shapes and designs, but the spirit of the original is still there. Here's a clip of even more Flying V history
