Billy Joel Once Played in a "Metal" Band

Featuring the Piano Man, Billy Joel in honor of his 69th Birthday today (5/9/49) in my Classic Rock Box Set feature. What you may not know, is that he dabbled in a psychedelic, heavy metal/acid rock band called Attila from 1969-1970. They released only one album that was promised in the liner notes to:  "destroy the world through amplification."  The short-lived project was panned immediately by the critics, in true Spinal Tap fashion:  Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic wrote,

"Attila undoubtedly is the worst album released in the history of rock & roll — hell, the history of recorded music itself. There have been many bad ideas in rock, but none match the colossal stupidity of Attila"

Joel himself has been quoted as saying they only did about a dozen gigs because the excessively loud music would drive away audiences in the clubs.  On a more positive note, his gigs in stadiums and arenas these days are continuing to sell out year after year. This summer the Legend visits Fenway Park for a 5th consecutive Summer. Enter to win FREE TICKETS HERE Pray, he doesn't wax nostalgic and whip out one of THESE tunes:
