MTV Makes Broadcast History 37 Years Ago Today


On August , 1981 Viacom Media made history by launching the World's first 24-hour Video Music Channel to an audience of approx. 2.1 million viewers. It was touted as bringing the "best of T.V. combined with the best of Radio".  Before that date, some artists had made promotional videos but they  didn't really have a good outlet or distribution for them. Above is the original broadcast opening with the line "Ladies and Gentleman, Rock and Roll" played over footage of the Apollo 11 rocket launch. The first V.J. (video jock) to appear was Mark Goodman. After the rest of the original line up introduced themselves, the first music video aired.
