9/18/83: KISS appears on T.V. without Makeup

via UCR     To mark (and promote) the release of their 11th studio album Lick It Up, KISS decided to appear on National television for the first time ever without their trademark makeup. The interview was an MTV Exclusive and featured a panel discussion led by VJ, J.J. Jackson. Watch above as Gene SImmons, Paul Stanley, Drummer Eric Carr and their new guitarist, Vinnie Vincent talk about baring it all for the first time.

In the book KISS: Behind the Mask, Stanley is quoted as saying "I've always believed that Lick It Up was proof that people listen with their eyes. The response to Lick It Up was four times the response to Creatures, and I think that's purely because people were tired of the image of the band and couldn't hear past what they saw."

The "Unmasking", as it was called proved to work in the band's favor. Lick It Up cracked the Top 30 on the Billboard 200 and brought fans out by the tens of thousands to see their new look on the ensuing tour.
