History was made on Saturday, August 1, 1981 at 12:01 a.m. when the world's first 24 hour, Music Television station began broadcasting. MTV launched (with the help of footage from the first Space Shuttle Columbia and Apollo 11 liftoffs) and the famous line: "Ladies and Gentleman, Rock And Roll...".
The first music video that played was The Buggles “Video Killed The Radio Star” (below). What most fans of the then, fledgling format might not remember were the next 9 videos that came on after that one.
Pat Benatar “You Better Run”, Rod Stewart “She Won’t Dance With Me”,The Who“You Better You Bet”, Ph.D. “Little Suzi’s On The Up” (later covered by those cats in Tesla), Cliff Richard “We Don’t Talk Anymore”, The Pretenders “Brass In Pocket”,Todd Rundgren“Time Heals”,REO Speedwagon“Take It On The Run” and Styx“Rockin’ The Paradise.”
WIth that the term "VJ" or video jock" was coined. . The original five MTV VJs in 1981 were Nina Blackwood,Mark Goodman,Alan Hunter,J.J. Jackson and Martha Quinn.
