In 1993, Rod Stewart began what would become a lifelong obsession/pet project. Having grown up in North London, overlooking Railroad Tracks, he was hooked on them at an early age. When he tried to convince his Father to help him expand his Train hobby, Mr. Stewart supplied him with a guitar instead. Which, in hindsight, was the smart choice.
But it was his move to a new home in Los Angeles in the 'nineties that focused his love on American Rail Lines. In particular, he was drawn to the 1940's-Era with the rise of skyscrapers and the industrial age. He was so enthralled with his new hobby he would take kits, tools and paints on the road when he toured. Stewart even went so far as to book an extra hotel room for a makeshift workshop so he could work on his beloved set pieces. In this piece form the Daily Mirror he reveals that his forte is the scenery and structures, as opposed to the actual train cars.
'It's the landscape I like. Attention to detail, extreme detail, is paramount. There shouldn't be any unsightly gaps or pavements that are too clean"
Rod and his epic 124-ft. x 23-ft. are also the featured cover story in the December edition of Railway Modeller magazine. You can take a sneak preview of this mind-blowing Layout HERE
