We Lost Tom Petty Three Years Ago Today

It's been three years since Tom Petty died from an accidental overdose of prescribed pain medication, but it still hurts. It's probably because of the combination of his music and personality. Everybody felt like they knew Tom, it was like we lost a friend.

Fans who got a chance to see him at the Boston Garden July 20th and 21st of 2017 had no idea that would be the last time they would be able to help him sing, "Breakdown," live. One of my favorite memories was the time he played the WZLX 25th Birthday Bash at the Xfinity Center in 2010. Song after great song, with the crowd so into it.

When Tom released his album, "Wildflowers" in 1994, it was supposed to be a double album, but the record company whittled it down to one disc. Back in 2012 he told Rolling Stone that he was going to reissue it with all the songs that were cut, cool demos, and more. “We recorded quite a lot of songs and dug them out, and the songs are just so cool.” He didn't live to see it happen, but October 16th, "Wildflowers and All The Rest," curated by daughter Adria Petty, her sister Annakim Violette, his wife Dana Petty, and Heartbreakers bandmates Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench will finally be released.

Here's one of the songs from the collection, a home recording of, "Wildflowers," Tom from his 2014 Fenway Park show, and Eddie Vedder doing a tribute at Fenway Park, playing the guitar that Tom Petty gifted him.
